Charity of Guns

In the name of saving the wild, a fence was drawn in blood, and the good name walked away from what its money had made.

The Poem They paid the rangers to keep the forest whole. The forest stayed. The people did not. A rifle raised to guard the antelope learned the shape of a human back. Somewhere a ledger balanced green, red where no one wrote it down. He folded his name and left the room, as if leaving could unmake the debt. The trees keep growing, indifferent, tall. The question stays under the leaves.
