The Poem The alarm is not a sound
but a smell.
We pack the photographs, the dog,
the box we always meant to sort.
The rest becomes a shape in the mirror,
shrinking.
Ash falls like the wrong season.
Behind us, the ridge is learning
a new alphabet of light.
We drive toward strangers
who will make room.
We do not look back—we can't.
