The Poem A cabin, a needle, thread pulled thin,
a mother sewing warmth from rags.
She took the smallest thing
and made it shine like church glass.
Every song a patch,
every patch a debt repaid
to the hollow that raised her.
Now the thread lies still,
but the coat keeps its color,
keeps its terrible kindness,
keeps everyone she wrapped
against the cold.
